Born in 1960 in French-speaking Switzerland into a family of farmers, François Thury, under the impulse of his mother, was initiated at the age of 6, into the first joys of music theory and the piano at the Lausanne conservatory. He continues his “classic” learning with different patient teachers because his diligence and persistence leave something to be desired. As a teenager he felt attracted to rock and jazz which he practiced dilettante. Before embarking on “serious” studies, he worked for 2 years on the family estate. At the age of 18, he simultaneously entered the Bern jazz school and the Lausanne conservatory where Jean Perrin welcomed him into his piano class. At the end of a few months he finally chooses the classic way which brings him a rigor and a technical learning which he needs. He also follows all the theoretical courses, analysis, harmony, solfege and especially orchestration, a branch he particularly appreciates. Jean Balissat gives him valuable advice and teaches him the meaning and technique of “assembling sounds”. Composition is the engine of his life as a musician. Many creations illustrate his musical universe. It took a few years and the encouragement of Henri Dutilleux to refine his rather tonal or even polytonal style. His influences are jazz, Ravel, Bartok, Debussy, J.S.Bach, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Chick Corea, Herbie Hancok.
Currently he works in the cultural center he founded in 2017, with his sister Anne-Catherine Schneiter and his brother-in-law Alain in Switzerland in Etoy: . les Ateliers de la Cote SA
