한양대학교 음대 교수 역임피아니스트 임종필은 서울대학교 음악대학을 수석으로 졸업하고 미국 University of North Texas에서 석사 및 박사학위를 취득하였다. 국내에서 재학 중 <계명대학교 콩쿠르>, <삼익 콩쿠르>, <동아음악콩쿠르>, <중앙음악콩쿠르>, <신인피아니스트 선발콩쿠르> 등에 상위 입상하여 뛰어난 기량을 인정받았고 음악춘추사 주최 <신인데뷔 연주회>, 조선일보사 주최 <신인음악회> 등을 통하여 장래가 유망한 피아니스트로 주목을 받았다. 유학 중에는 에서 1위 입상하고 미국을 중심으로 연주활동을 하였다. 1992년 월간 <피아노 음악>의 <창간 10주년 기념 초청 독주회>를 계기로 본격적인 국내활동을 시작하였으며 1993년 한국예술종합학교 음악원의 개원과 함께 초대교수로 영입되었다. 그가 연주한 수많은 독주회 중 차이코프스키, 쇼팽, 라흐마니노프, 프로코피에프 등 한 작곡가의 작품을 집중 조명한 프로그램들이 주목받았는데, 특히 8회에 걸친 <슈만 시리즈>와 3회에 걸친 <스페인음악 시리즈>를 통하여 학구적인 연주자로서의 위상을 널리 인정받아 왔다. <교향악축제>, <대한민국 음악제> 등 주요 음악제에 초청되었고 대구시향, 부산시향, 서울아카데미심포니, 청주시향, 강남오케스트라, 인천시향, 원주시향, 수원시향, 모스크바 볼쇼이오케스트라, 부천시향, 전주시향, 공주시향, 연세신포니에타 등과 협연하였다. 실내악 부문에서도 활약하였으며 , <낭만파 바이올린소나타 시리즈>, 등이 있다. 중국, 일본, 이태리, 러시아, 독일 등 해외에서도 많은 연주를 하였고 <서울국제음악콩쿠르>, , , 프랑스 , 일본 등의 심사위원을 역임하였다. 또한 일본 의 초빙교수로 활동하는 등 교육자로서의 활동영역도 넓혀왔다. 1993년부터 20년 동안 한국예술종합학교 음악원 교수로 재직했으며 2013년부터 2019년까지 한양대학교 음악대학 교수로 재직하였다.
Pianist Chongpil Lim has emerged as an established artist on an international level and as a prime virtuoso in his native South Korea. He drew attention at an early age by winning some of the most prestigious competitions in the country, such as the Dong-A Music Competition and the Joongang Music Competition. Upon graduating from Seoul National University with highest honors, he continued his studies at the University of North Texas in the United States, where he received his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. During his graduate study, he won several competitions, among them the Texas Young Artists Competition, and he was invited to perform numerous concerts both in the U.S. and Korea, receiving many favorable reviews. In 1993 he was offered a position as a founding professor at the opening of the Korea National University of Arts. Since then, he has been performing actively in addition to teaching. He has given numerous recitals throughout the country and also has performed in China, Japan, Italy, Germany, Russia and the U.S.. Most notable are the series of performances of the complete piano works of Robert Schumann, which he finished in 2007. He has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras such as Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater Orchestra, as well as with most of Korea’s major symphony orchestras. He has also been equally active as a chamber musician and collaborator, performing with many artists including the violinists Aaron Rosand and Regis Pasquier. As a teacher, he continues to hold many masterclasses throughout Korea, and has been invited to teach at music festivals in Italy, Germany, and China. His pupils have received awards in competitions such as the Long-Thibaud International Competition, Geneva International Music Competition, ISANGYUN International Competition, Nagoya International Competition, and China International Competition. He has served as a juror not only for all of Korea’s major competitions, but also for international competitions such as Nagoya International Music Competition, Seoul International Music Competition, Piano Campus International Competition, Asia-Pacific International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, and PTNA Competition in Japan. After twenty years of teaching at the Korea National University of Arts, he joined Hanyang University as a faculty member in 2013, from which he retired in 2019.
